Honey Exhibit

Ruby Jo’s Raw Honey

Some honey is purchased.

Some honey is discovered.

Ruby Jo’s was discovered.

We found it along M-107 in Silver City, Michigan, on the road that carries travelers toward the Porcupine Mountains. The shop itself is charming and welcoming, the kind of place that invites you to slow down and look around rather than rush through.

And then there was Ruby.

Ruby was determined that visitors should arrive.

Leaving, however, seemed entirely optional.

By the time we finally worked our way toward the door, I had 4 jars of honey in hand and the feeling that Ruby would have preferred we stay awhile longer.

The honey itself immediately stood out for a reason many shoppers might overlook.

Cloudiness.

Not enough to alarm anyone. Just enough to reveal character.

I mentioned it to Jo while examining the jar.

With a deep sigh she replied:

“Yes! You get it! Thank you!”

That moment told me a great deal about both the honey and the people selling it.

Many consumers have been trained to believe that crystal-clear honey is somehow superior. I often find myself feeling the opposite. A little haze suggests a honey that still carries traces of its journey. Tiny remnants of pollen, wax, and the environment from which it came. Like a great hazy IPA, some of the identity remains suspended in the jar.

This honey had seen some things.

The flavor confirmed the first impression.

The sweetness arrives pleasantly enough, but the real story begins after the sweetness fades. The finish is remarkably complex. There is a lingering character that reminds me of the finest traditional honeys I’ve encountered. Slightly medicinal, though not in a negative sense. Medicinal in the way a pine forest smells medicinal. Wild. Natural. Honest.

The aftertaste is where great honey often reveals its signature.

Ruby Jo’s possesses a long, layered finish that continues evolving after each taste. It invites another spoonful not because of its sweetness, but because of its complexity.

In a world increasingly filled with products designed to be perfectly filtered, perfectly polished, and perfectly consistent, Ruby Jo’s honey feels refreshingly unconcerned with perfection.

It simply tells the truth.

And sometimes the truth is a little cloudy.
