Uruguay

Uruguay is a small country with an unusually sophisticated honey-traceability system. Every beekeeper must make an annual declaration of hive stock and hive location through the national SINATPA system, while extraction rooms and honey drums are also tracked. That makes provenance part of the national infrastructure rather than merely a marketing claim. Uruguay's honey landscapes include open grasslands and pastures, major Eucalyptus grandis forestry areas, and one especially remarkable river system near Nuevo Berlín, where beekeepers place colonies on islands in the Uruguay River—sometimes on raised or floating structures because of flooding. The bees themselves add another story: recent national monitoring found a predominantly Africanized managed population, while researchers have identified a particular eastern Uruguayan population capable of surviving Varroa destructor much better than susceptible colonies. In 2026, producers are also preparing for El Niño conditions, making climate adaptation part of the current honey record.
