Vanuatu's young honey industry sits inside a much older and more complicated Bee landscape. A 2012 disease survey estimated about 400 managed colonies—more than 90% on Efate—and about five tonnes of honey annually, while also confirming introduced Apis cerana on Efate, Pele and Emao and Varroa jacobsoni reproducing in European honey-bee colonies. By 2021, Tanna Coffee Bee and the Farm Support Association were experimenting with queen rearing and transferring captured colonies into managed hives. Current regional programmes still describe Vanuatu as having few hives and a weak industry, so historical numbers remain dated rather than treated as today's census.
