Tonga
Tonga's honey story is one of survival, island isolation and natural Bee adaptation. Scientific work on Apis mellifera sampled Vavaʻu and Tongatapu as two unusually informative island populations: Varroa destructor reached Vavaʻu in 2006, yet untreated colonies persisted with natural tolerance, while Tongatapu colonies in the same study remained Varroa-free. The modern beekeeping industry is still small and vulnerable. Hunga Tonga–Hunga Haʻapai's 2022 eruption and tsunami destroyed forage and forced colonies to abandon hives, including all 21 hives in the OHAI community project before it began rebuilding.
