Solomon Islands

Solomon Islands carries one of the Pacific's clearest examples of an apiculture system transformed by invasive bees and mites. A 2026 peer-reviewed study estimates that by 2024 the country had 242 beekeeping enterprises, 1,158 active managed colonies and only about 12 tonnes of honey annually—after three decades of steep decline. The invasion of Apis cerana around 2000 and widespread Varroa jacobsoni are central to the modern story. Current government and ACIAR work is rebuilding training, pest management, nutrition, genetics and industry coordination.
