Papua New Guinea's strongest honey identity sits in the Eastern Highlands around Goroka, where high altitude, coffee gardens, rainforest and commercial hardwoods support smallholder Apis mellifera beekeeping. ACIAR research with Helping Hand Honey Producers used DNA metabarcoding to identify bee forage including Terminalia macrocarpa, rainforest trees, coffee and garden crops. PNG also carries a major biosecurity story: introduced Apis cerana and Varroa jacobsoni have altered the Bee landscape, making species and parasite provenance as important as flowers.
