Georgia

Georgia combines protected honey geography with one of the world's best-known regional honey-bee populations. Its national geographical-indication registry includes Machakhela Honey, Ninotsminda Honey and Mukhuri Honey. Ninotsminda is an especially clear Atlas case: a high-elevation Javakheti landscape with a defined protected area and subalpine/alpine forage. Georgia is also the home landscape of the Caucasian honey bee, Apis mellifera caucasia, whose genetics and conservation remain active research concerns. Traditional Jara beekeeping in western Georgia adds a cultural hive system that should be preserved separately from modern box-hive production.
