Vatican City may be the most useful “don't fake the data” example in the entire European research pass. The Vatican Gardens occupy roughly 22 hectares—about half of Vatican City's territory—and contain lawns, woods, flowers, medicinal plants and a long history of orchards and cultivation. Yet this research pass did not establish a current commercial honey producer or production apiary physically inside the sovereign borders of Vatican City. The famous “Vatican” or papal honey story belongs somewhere else: Castel Gandolfo, south of Rome. Historical reporting documents beehives and a papal beekeeper on the working farm at the Pontifical Villas there. The property belongs to the Holy See, but geographically it is in Italy, not Vatican City. That distinction is exactly what Honey Chronicles needs Atlas for. Institutional ownership, political identity and the actual place where a bee collected nectar are not always the same thing.
