Spain

Spain is one of Europe's true honey giants, and 2026 made its map even richer. Official Ministry data put the 2024 harvest at 33,134 tonnes, up roughly 20% after two drought-hit seasons. Spain also has the EU's largest hive census and an unusually professional beekeeping sector, with migratory operations especially important in the center and south. What makes Spain irresistible to Atlas, though, is geographical diversity. As of July 2026, the Agriculture Ministry listed nine registered honey geographical indications, including La Alcarria, Granada, Tenerife, Liébana, Villuercas-Ibores, Ibiza, Asturias and the newly registered Miel de Málaga. Tenerife alone can produce honeys shaped by endemic island plants and major elevation changes, while La Alcarria is defined by rosemary and lavender country. Beneath this diversity is the native Iberian honeybee, Apis mellifera iberiensis, itself genetically complex. Spain is not one honey landscape. It is almost a continental honey system inside a single country.
