Slovenia

Slovenia isn't simply good at beekeeping; it has organized part of its national identity around bees. With only about two million people, the country reported more than 11,000 beekeepers, over 15,000 apiaries and roughly 200,000 colonies in 2025. Even more unusually, Slovenia protects the native *Carniolan honeybee, Apis mellifera carnica in law, and only that bee may be kept for beekeeping in the country. Honey receives similar attention. Three Slovenian honey identities carry European geographical protection: Slovenski med, Kočevje forest honey and Karst honey. The Kočevje producer association publishes the actual names and contact information of certified PDO beekeepers. And a 2026 amendment to Slovenski med strengthens traceability further: qualifying jars carry a QR code that lets consumers verify the beekeeper's certificate. Slovenia isn't merely producing honey.
