Serbia

Serbia is a country where honey geography and bee genetics have both been rearranged by modern beekeeping. The eastern Homolje region is famous enough for its honey to carry a protected Serbian geographical origin, while acacia, sunflower, linden and meadow honeys connect beekeepers to forests and agricultural landscapes elsewhere. Serbia also has a large modern bee population and an increasingly migratory industry. That movement matters genetically. Older studies described both Carniolan and Macedonian honeybee populations in Serbia, but modern research finds managed colonies becoming more genetically uniform as beekeepers move hives and favor selected Carniolan queens. The Serbian government is simultaneously wrestling with another Honey Chronicles concern: honey authenticity. In 2025, the Agriculture Ministry and national beekeeper organization began discussing stricter action against fraudulent honey. Serbia therefore gives HC three connected stories: protected regional honey, changing bee genetics and the fight to make sure a jar labeled honey actually contains honey.
