Romania's honey landscape is driven by a remarkable collision of forest, farmland and mountains. Acacia, linden, rapeseed, sunflower, honeydew and polyfloral honeys are repeatedly identified among the country's major commercial types, while recent research has shown that Romanian honey can even be classified geographically through its mineral and chemical profile. Transylvania alone produces acacia, rapeseed, forest honeydew, mountain, raspberry and heather honeys. The country's bee is equally interesting: Romanian populations were distinct enough from neighboring bees that researchers recognized the *Carpathian honeybee, Apis mellifera carpatica***. Yet Romania currently lacks an EU PDO/PGI honey designation, despite being one of Europe's important producers. That gap may actually be one of the strongest Story leads: Romania has distinctive honey, distinctive bee genetics and highly recognizable landscapes—but comparatively little geographical protection on the jars.
