Malta

Malta may be one of the smallest countries in Europe, but its honey calendar is spectacularly distinct. Spring brings pale multifloral honey; summer belongs to the island's aromatic wild thyme; autumn turns darker with carob and eucalyptus. On the rocky garrigue of northwestern Malta, Gozo and Comino, thyme honey can carry a landscape that is dry, exposed and unmistakably Mediterranean. The bees make the story even stronger. Apis mellifera ruttneri evolved in isolation on the Maltese Islands and was officially declared Malta's National Insect in 2024. Its conservation is now serious enough that a 2026–2028 action plan proposes DNA testing, a beekeeper registry, verified Maltese-bee queens and eventually QR codes on honey jars linking buyers to confirmed native-bee producers. That puts Malta directly at the intersection of honey terroir, genetics, cultural identity and modern traceability.
