Lithuania's honey story reaches far beyond the modern wooden hive. In Stripeikiai, Aukštaitija, the Museum of Ancient Beekeeping preserves a tradition stretching back centuries, complete with old hive forms and an annual honey-gathering celebration. Farther south in Dzūkija National Park, people are actively reviving an even older practice: keeping bees in specially prepared hollows high in forest trees. Meanwhile, modern researchers are searching for and genetically studying surviving populations of Lithuania's native European dark honeybee, Apis mellifera mellifera. Commercial beekeeping has moved firmly into the present as well. Twin brothers Ignas and Vilius now manage more than 300 colonies and harvest buckwheat, linden, dandelion and autumn honeydew honeys. Lithuania therefore gives HC something unusually complete: ancient forest beekeeping, living cultural ritual, native-bee conservation and contemporary family honey businesses all occupying the same map.
