Liechtenstein

Liechtenstein is so small that its honey landscape naturally spills across borders. In Schaan, beekeeper Marco Jehle-Radkohl keeps bees using biodynamic methods, while his Rheinstoff project tends both vineyards and bee colonies on both sides of the Rhine in Liechtenstein and Switzerland. A second Schaan project has six Demeter-managed colonies living among meadows and green roofs at Hilcona's headquarters. That combination—vineyards, Rhine Valley agriculture, tiny national borders and bee forage that pays no attention to them—makes Liechtenstein more interesting than its size suggests. What we do not yet have is evidence for a nationally distinctive floral honey or formally recognized honey region. For Atlas, the honest story is therefore not “famous Liechtenstein honey.” It is a compact, cross-border beekeeping landscape where individual producers may give us much finer geographic detail than national statistics ever will.
