Estonia's honey landscape is built around short summers, forests, meadows and a managed bee population that has changed dramatically over time. A 2026 genetics study places Estonia inside the historic range of the European dark honeybee but found today's sampled apiaries dominated by Italian and Carniolan maternal lineages. Only a small fraction retained the native dark-bee lineage. Meanwhile, Estonian beekeeping ranges from small household apiaries to Tull Honey Company with more than 1,700 colonies, while organic producers use forests and protected landscapes as part of their identity. Northern weather remains a constant gamble: heavy rain badly disrupted the 2025 honey harvest.
