Croatia is almost a ready-made honey map. Instead of one nationally famous honey, it has a growing collection of place-protected honeys tied to very different landscapes: Slavonian plains, Gorski kotar forests, Istrian hills, Dalmatian karst and the acacia country of Zagorje. Registered protected names include Slavonski med, Goranski medun, Zagorski bagremov med, Istarski med / Istrski med and Dalmatinski med, while additional honey protections were still moving through registration in 2026. Goranski medun is especially interesting because it is honeydew honey associated with forest trees rather than ordinary flower nectar. Croatia is also firmly within the native range of the Carniolan honeybee, Apis mellifera carnica.
