Bosnia and Herzegovina

Bosnia and Herzegovina has several very different honey stories packed into one small country. In the northwest, chestnut forests around Cazin and Bosanska Krupa produce honeys distinct enough for researchers to detect geographic patterns from pollen and chemistry. Farther south, rocky Herzegovina is associated with Mediterranean and mountain vegetation, especially wild sage. Climate change is becoming part of the honey story as beekeepers report earlier acacia bloom followed by rain or late frost that can erase the nectar flow. Beekeeping also carries a human recovery story here: FAO-backed programs have helped landmine survivors and people with disabilities establish apiaries and sell bee products.
