Austria

Austria is big honey country built mostly from small beekeepers rather than giant operations. The Austrian agriculture ministry counted 36,369 beekeepers and 480,475 colonies in 2024, while national honey production for 2023/24 was about 5,500 tonnes. Mountain elevation, forest, pasture and alpine flowers make regional identity especially strong. At the Kronhofer organic apiary in Carinthia, colonies range from about 600 metres in the Gailtal valley to 2,000 metres in the Nockberge, producing forest, alpine-rose and dandelion honeys. In Tyrol, Alpegg runs only 15 colonies but has gone in another interesting direction: certified Demeter biodynamic beekeeping. Austria also matters genetically. The Carniolan honeybee, Apis mellifera carnica, is native to substantial parts of the country and is maintained through organized breeding programs. This is a mature honey culture where terroir, bee genetics and small-scale craft all overlap.
