Albania

Albania has the sort of honey landscape that gets more interesting the closer you look. Mountain country, Mediterranean vegetation, chestnut forests, thyme, clover and pine all feed a largely small-scale beekeeping culture. Government-sector research identifies Korçë and Sarandë as particularly well-known honey-producing areas, while many households elsewhere keep bees as part of mixed rural farming. Albania also has an unusual bee story: researchers have long described it as a genetic meeting zone between Carniolan and Macedonian honeybee populations rather than a place with one cleanly separated bee type. Local consumers strongly favor domestic honey, often buying directly from beekeepers. Morava Honey near Korçë offers a useful example of how the industry is changing, combining its own production with honey collected from many smaller Albanian beekeepers.
