Sri Lankan beekeeping is still largely small-scale and centers on the Asian honey bee Apis cerana, with wild Apis dorsata and Apis florea adding separate forest and dry-zone relationships. The Department of Agriculture maintains a dedicated Bee Development Unit for training, equipment, colony and honey support. Rubber-growing districts in the southwest are repeatedly identified as important managed-honey areas, while dry-zone and upland forest honeys remain promising but incompletely characterized.
