Taking shape LA / LAO Asia

Laos has a forest-honey culture built primarily around the native Asian honey bee Apis cerana and smallholder management rather than industrial-scale apiaries. Xieng Khouang is the strongest documented honey landscape in this pass: community beekeepers use forest-based hives, collective quality control and participatory guarantee approaches to build a recognizable Lao forest-honey identity. A 2025 FAO-highlighted study also shows that Apis cerana abundance in central Laos falls as agricultural intensification rises, tying honey and pollination directly to landscape management.
