Japan's honey story has two parallel Bee systems: the native Japanese honey bee Apis cerana japonica and the higher-volume Western honey bee Apis mellifera. MAFF's latest sector material places domestic honey production at about 2,600 tonnes in 2024, only a small share of national consumption. Traditional Japanese-bee culture remains especially visible on Tsushima and in the Kozagawa/Kumano area, while commercial producers move Western honey-bee colonies between major nectar flows from Kumamoto to Akita and Hokkaido.
