Bhutan's honey story is unusually species-rich for a small Himalayan country. Current national reporting says more than 7,500 households were engaged in beekeeping in 2024 and produced nearly 42 metric tonnes of honey, while the 13th Five-Year Plan targets more than 80 tonnes by 2029. Bumthang is the country's clearest organized commercial honey landscape, centered on Apis mellifera and the Beekeepers' Cooperative of Bumthang, while subtropical districts maintain Apis cerana and stingless-bee systems. Bhutan also supports wild Apis laboriosa, Apis dorsata and Apis florea, making Bee identity an important part of provenance rather than a footnote.
