Azerbaijan

Taking shape AZ / AZE Asia

Azerbaijan combines a large modern beekeeping sector with unusually strong mountain-honey traditions. The State Statistical Committee reported 579,000 bee colonies in 30,601 holdings and 5,166.3 tonnes of honey in 2024. In the northwest, Slow Food documents Caucasian Mountain Honey and the surviving tekne log-hive tradition, tying honey to mountain ecology and the Caucasian grey honey bee. Kalbajar is another strong mountain-honey identity and hosted a Ministry-backed Honey Festival in September 2025, although this research did not confirm a registered GI. Azerbaijan also has active research and breeding around Apis mellifera caucasica populations, including the Bozdag/Kabaktapa group in Goranboy.
