About the Producer

A little history

Peer-reviewed research identifies ART as CESMACH’s sister, or parallel, beekeeping cooperative. One source gives its official founding date as 2018, while a separate 2020 study says CESMACH members created Miel Real del Triunfo in 2019 to sell honey. The conflicting dates remain unresolved without organizational or registry evidence.

How They Work

Beekeeping in practice

ART is a producer cooperative that supports member beekeepers and markets their honey in partnership with CESMACH. It provides technical and material support, along with commercial connections. In 2019, its honey was reportedly sold in bulk to one buyer, while some members also sold honey locally.

Practices

How they work

  • ART members in the study managed Western honey bees (Apis mellifera) in diversified coffee-farm systems, often alongside maize and other crops.
  • ART calls its honey “agroecological,” while the studied source expressly reports that ART held no sustainability certificates at that time.
  • Among the 25 beekeepers studied in 2018–2019, most apiaries were stationary; three producers moved hives annually to lower elevations. In higher-altitude apiaries, the usual honey harvest was March–May.
  • Participating farmers reported retaining or avoiding excessive early pruning of shade trees because pruning could reduce floral resources for bees; some also planted trees or shrubs to diversify forage.
